21 Years Of The Dragon Apocalypse: An audio essay on Reign Of Fire

An audio essay on Reign of Fire written and read by Maria Lewis, produced and edited by Blake Howard.

Reign Of Fire crashed and – ironically – burned at the box office in the summer of 2002. Audiences decided it didn’t deliver on all it promised on the poster, which depicted a dystopian London besieged by dragons as they set fire to Big Ben. It debuted in third place on its opening weekend, behind Men In Black II and Road To Perdition. By the end of its theatrical run, it barely scraped back its $60 million budget internationally with a global haul of $82 million, which is an interesting figure when you consider its stars - Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Gerard Butler – were all on their way to A-List status. It has taken two decades and a surprise legacy thanks to home entertainment and cable reruns, but now viewers are right there with them.
