‘Mystery Road’ Is Australia’s Answer To ‘True Detective’ - ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON JUNKEE

Can a film series transition to television and still be great? More often than not, the answer is ‘no’. But Mystery Road, a new six-part series from the ABC, has proven itself the exception to that rule. 1% review: Australian biker movie is Sons of Anarchy on steroids - ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON FLICKS.COM.AU

Director Stephen McCallum’s deafening debut dives into the Australian biker underworld with a roar, grabbing that glamorised Sons of Anarchy image and bludgeoning it to death. The raw and disturbing Macbeth riff from writer and star Matt Nable has no sentimentality for the ‘brotherhood’ of the biker; instead power – sexual, physical and psychological – corrupts absolutely.

Brothers’ Nest review: deeply dark Australian thriller channels the Coen brothers - - ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON FLICKS.COM.AU

While this twisted tale has been drawing convenient comparisons to the work of the Coen Brothers, Brothers’ Nest makes Blood Simple look like The Wizard of Oz.
